ISS 2026 - Capitalism and Democracy: Paradigm Shifts and Creative Transformations The ISS2026 conference (International Schumpeter Society Conference) will be held in Strasbourg, France, from July 1st to July 4th, 2026. This year's conference, which marks the 40th anniversary of the International Schumpeter Society, will be hosted by BETA (Bureau d'Economie Théorique et Appliquée), at the University of Strasbourg (France).
ISS2026 is the 21st biennial conference of The International Joseph A. Schumpeter Society. The conference will take place in Strasbourg, France, from Wednesday, July 1st to Saturday, July 4th, 2026. The conference is opening on July 1st with a doctoral event. The theme of the ISS 2026 is 'Capitalism and Democracy: Paradigm Shifts and Creative Transformations'. Profound changes are underway in environmental, economic, social, political, scientific and technological areas that are transforming our societies in depth. These changes are questioning, and even challenging, both capitalism and democracy in their contemporary forms. While J.A. Schumpeter considered creative destruction to be the engine of progress, in 1947 he substituted or at least complemented 'destruction' with 'creative response'. Our scientific community urgently needs to contribute more to this creative response. The ISS26 conference is an opportunity to do so. In keeping with the spirit of the Schumpeter Society, submitted papers may address a wide variety of topics. Topics such as creativity, novelty, innovation, and emerging socio-economic changes and challenges at individual, organisational, institutional, and macroeconomic levels, and mobilise different theoretical, analytical, and empirical approaches and traditions. Contributions concerning individual behaviours, firms, organisations, industrial dynamics and/or macrodynamics and policies are welcome. More specifically, ISS 2026 could addresses contemporary topics such as:
These topics are by no means exhaustive.
The ISS 2026 is also marking and celebrating the 40th anniversary of the International Joseph A. Schumpeter Society, founded in 1986 the initiative of Wolfgang F. Stolper and Horst Hanusch. The International Joseph Alois Schumpeter Society, ISS organizes in 2026 a Schumpeter Prize Competition, in parallel to the ISS 2026 Conference. Following the tradition of the previous ISS conferences, selected papers presented at the ISS2026 conference will be published in a special issue of the Journal of Evolutionary Economics (the official journal of the ISS), as well as in edited volumes published by Springer Press and/or Cambridge University Press.
